Red Alert 2 got the Superweapons backwards.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 11:29 AM PST

Been playing a little bit of the game again, and I still think it's the best in the series- though Generals and Tiberium Wars also get high marks from me. Regardless, I got to overthinking things, and I've come to the conclusion that the Allied and Soviet superweapons would have made more sense if they were swapped.

We constantly see the Soviets using lightning-based technology with their plethora of Tesla-based weaponry- Tesla Coils, Tesla Troopers, Tesla Tanks, in the campaign they even turn the Eiffel Tower into a giant Tesla coil. Because of this, I think the idea of a massive lightning-storm generator would make more sense if utilized by the Soviets.

But it's not just the Weather Generator that seems like it would be better suited for the swap, I think the nukes also make more sense in the hands of the Allies. In the course of the campaign, Albert Einstein directly lends his knowledge to the development of allied weaponry- since it's his work that provided the spark to ignite nuclear research programs, it seems to follow that the Nuclear Silos would make more thematic sense in the hands of the Allied forces.

My ideas on how to make base-building RTS games popular again (you will hate these ideas but please bear with me)

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 06:37 AM PST

    Ok here goes.

First of all, go for the mass market - release it on console (in addition to PC of course). Yeah you think I'm a moron right now but hear me out. The trick is to not use one of those meh controller setups, instead, make it 100% native mouse and keyboard. You know Logitech and Microsoft make some really decent office grade wireless M&KB's bundles for like $20. I bet when negotiated in bulk a big publisher could get them for a fraction of the price. Package them with the game and out of the box you have a PC like experience. Both platforms support native M&KB but very few games use them. You would immediately stand out and have the distinction for being the only RTS game on console AND using the controls they were designed to be played with. By doing this you hit the mass market and you bring in a whole new generation into the RTS genre.

Second, most new players, after beating campaign, stick with skirmish for a long while before venturing online. AND - this is the key part - 99% of players prefer to turtle until they really feel comfortable playing aggressively. I think the the mistake a lot of RTS games make is the difference between easy and hard AI difficulties is that easy is simply less aggressive, while hard is more aggressive, but fundamentally they both have the same play style. I think the easy / hard paradigm is simply flawed. I think it should be split between Defensive Mode (turtling) and Offensive Mode (regular AI). It's not just a cosmetic renaming - Defensive Mode would be entirely designed around turtling - both in terms of game design (larger emphasis on walls and defensive structures / weapons), but also the way the AI attacks - the AI would likewise be designed to also turtle and hold back for very long periods. The core of my idea here is if we know 99% of newer players prefer skirmish and are more comfortable with a turtling strategy, why not design a mode exclusively for them? Don't simply give them an "easy AI" mode that is the same shit as "hard" but less aggressive, rather, really think about what we all wanted when we first started playing base-building RTS games...we all wanted to build a base. I think that reflecting back on how we all got started is the only way to bring new blood and thus new life into the genre.

    Thoughts?

CnC Generals Zero Hour crashing instantly

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 01:15 PM PST

Sorry if this is annoying/ a post thats a duplicate of a million, but ive legit never had issues launching this game until now randomly.

When i hit play in Origin on the game, it closes origin, and then about 2 seconds later origin will pop up again, as if I closed the game. Im on windows 10, and ive played the game near 300 hours on W10 before, cant remember why I uninstalled but reinstalling brought me to this.

Ive tried copy and pasting that opinions.ini text every google page says to do, ive tried installing that old june2010 vers of directx, i tried that gentool thing from cncnz, and of course ive ran as admin, through compability mode for W-XP(SP3). None have resulted in any changes to the crash.

thanks for whoever tries to help

Recommended Mods for Generals and Zero Hour

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 11:34 AM PST

I love the games as much as life itself but I've played them so much over the years I'm wondering what Mods you guys would recommend to overhaul/enhance the experience - Campaigns or Generals challenge

I've seen Firestorm come up a few times and that looks best so far.

    Thank you!!

    Random Mental Omega mod question

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 01:00 PM PST

Just out of curiousity, for those who have played Mental Omega 3.3.4...in AI Skirmish games, which side do you think is the more difficult to stand against?

In my recent plays, Soviets seem easiest, Allies, Epsilon/Yuri, then Foenn I find is more difficult.

Soo, I bought the Ultimate Collection and literally none of the games are working

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 09:05 AM PST

When I click the 'play' button nothing happens, not even a splashscreen, after a few second the button become clickable again.

I have tried everything I found on the web: restarted my PC, restarted Origin, running the games in compatibility mode, running the games as administrator, using the "repair game" tool, added Origin to my firewall exceptions, disabled Origin ingame, etc... none of these are helped.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Edit: I have Win 10.

Should I get the Ultimate Collection or wait for Remasters?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 10:40 PM PST

I've played CnC since childhood using my parents' old discs (The First Decade and Tiberium Wars), but the Ultimate Collection is half price atm and I'm considering buying it to have all the games in one place and prepare without any discs.

However, I'm aware that some remasters are coming out this year, with the potential for more further down the line. Do we think EA will release a new 'ultimate' collection with these in? Maybe add them to the collection as a gift to appease fans, or at least allow for an upgrade to the collection that ds cheaper than buying the new games separately?

To be clear, I don't moan this in a "I feel entitled to the new games if I buy the Ultimate Collection" way, I'm just trying to think what the best economic plan for having a truly 'ultimate' collection will look like come the advent of the remasters.
