An open letter to the EA team for the excellent communication provided through the remaster's development

TL;DR is in the last paragraph.

I'm not a game dev, but I am a dev. I've found communication to be one of the most difficult skills to master when working on software. Aside from being a dev, I'm also a passionate fan of this series. I played RA2 as my entry to the series and remember my mom discussing with my dad how violent that game was and pointed to how she didn't like the corpses of the dead troops fading into the ground (hard to believe that was almost two decades ago). Its been an emotional ride for this franchise. Beginning with Westwood being bought out, to the lackluster RA3 release and the total failure of C&C 4, I and many others surely felt the length of time that would have to pass before the series would even get brought up in a serious conversation again.

Now don't get me wrong, the remaster hasn't come out yet. The point of this post is to simply highlight the incredible communication relayed to us in a time of total, reasonable doubt in a company that is not known to be successful in its deliveries, in the lightest of words. I think praise is due here and other organizations should look to this as a shining example. It's honestly super impressive the amount of hope they've restored in myself and it feels great to speak positively of /u/EA_Jimtern. Can't say I feel the same way about all of EA, but this subdivision is killing it. Definitely a needed step in the right direction.

If any of you here are also Metroid fans, you'll know of a different type of communication. MP4 has been in development for 3/4 years now and the last update we've received was over a year ago. That communication we received then was great, the actual news was obviously disappointing but the reaction from the community was well received. We like to know the status, good or bad. However, our faith cannot be kept forever and going that long without any word being said doesn't give us confidence in the development. Keeping a community involved and discussing your product is a valuable money maker. We talk to others and share these types of posts with our friends. Send that to your business team Jim.

As a final example of attempted communication done in a poor format, look to Blizzard, a company we would normally turn to as a beacon of what every game organization should strive to achieve. Nowadays when we think of Blizzard we think of "you have phones, don't you?", Warcraft 3 Reforged zero communication, and every other expansion in World of Warcraft being a total failure. Hell, the dev updates in WoW normally have tons of intended communication, but fail to then provide patch notes on the changes actually being implemented, leaving the playerbase to discover them on live or finding those updates to be total lies. Its even worse if you're an addon (mod) developer for that game, where often changes are made with zero communication at all, breaking tons of important player UI mods that the base game fails to include. The only option for those devs is to hop on the player testing realm and see if their mods still work and hope they can discover what changed.

I'm definitely ranting at this point, but I'll reiterate, praise is deserved where praise is due. The team responsible for this remaster has done a stand up job of providing us with updates and keeping us involved. We have something we can contribute and they have figured out a way to provide value and meaning to all of that. Giving that type of transparency is incredible and serves as its own marketing technique. I'm happy to pay for this product and am super excited for the release. The way the updates were communicated to the C&C community on the remaster are beyond commendable, deserve praise and should be looked to by other devs all over as an example. Well done. I'm personally beyond impressed.

I‘m just replaying Tiberian Sun for a long time again and that story...

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 01:16 PM PDT

I don't remember it being that .. cheezy. The whole GDI campaign especially the videos made me feel like I'm rewatching an 80s Schwarzenegger/Stallone movie.

    Edit:

Please take off the nostalgia glasses before commenting here. If you don't even remember the tiberian sun not FS campaign videos. Look them up. And no, Thats criticism about the gameplay. This is purely about the campaign (story) + videos. Don't get me started about the acting, haven't talked about that either

World Domination Tour if Red Alert 2/Tiberium Sun gets a remaster?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 01:48 PM PDT

This just kinda popped into my head after rewatching the CnC Gvmers video but if the remasters sell well enough to justify a remaster of RA2 and expansions and TS and expansion(Command and Conquer gen 2 from here on for ease), would you want them to bring back the World Domination Tour game mode?

For those who do not know what World Domination Tour was, it was an online matchmaking game where you were playing as a faction and you were matched up against another player of the other faction trying to compete to take over the world region by region. After a while a region was locked and the side that won the most matches in that region took the region for their side. Rinse and repeat and after a while everything was eventually reset to start anew kinda like all of the seasons in Destiny and other games. Both gen 2 games had this with GDI vs Nod and Soviets vs Allies for their respective games. If it gets remastered would you like to see it straight 1:1 or would you like to even see some odd combos, e.g. TS factions fighting with RA2 factions with respective uniqe features like tib only hurting Tiberum universe factions?

How do I play Command and Conquer Generals if I only have the second disk?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 02:17 PM PDT

I haven't played this game is over 10 years. Since we are stuck at home due to the pandemic outside, this seemed like a great opportunity to play again. Sadly, I seem to have lost the first disk somehow. Any idea how I could play again? I don't even know if it will work on a windows 10 laptop, but hopefully I can make it run in some kind of compatibility mode.

"6-DISC REMASTERED ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK SIGNED BY FRANK KLEPACKI" ?????

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 11:53 AM PDT

Is Frank Klepacki actually signing it, or will we just get some sort of signature thats been copied on xxx amount times on papers ?

A real signature by Frank Klepacki would make this deal really worth it to me, but if its just something thats copied not so much....

    The Campaigns

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 09:53 AM PDT

So, I've been back playing the older Westwood CnCs, and I've been trying to work out why the Red Alert campaigns (in particular Red Alert 2) feel so much easier than the rest.

And I think it's down to the economy.

TS, for example, you start most missions with 5/7k credits. Your harvesters are then slow and unload slowly. This means you're very rarely in a position to just spam units, each loss matters.

In comparison, RA2, most missions are 10/15k starts. And with the faster harvesters and no silos, you can just churn out bodies.

    Thoughts?
