Guide on playing C&C Generals ZH and RA2 / Yuri's Revenge in 2020 on modern Windows 10 systems

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:39 AM PST

I've seen a lot of advice here to tweak .ini files or change the settings (e.g. setting compatibility modes etc), or apply all sorts of weird mods, but these are all band-aid level fixes that don't always stand the test of time. I've noticed that over the years many of the tips and tricks fade away and stop working or present new problems. In making this guide, I've read through over a decade of old guides and very few of them hold up. Therefore I want to focus on what's considered the best and most reliable ways to run these games that will hopefully stand the test of time.

In this guide, I will also refrain from discussing any mods because as I said I want anyone who stumbles across this 5 years from now to still be able to get this to work. Mods that slowly lose support over time only add to the headache of trying to get these games to run. Without further ado, here I go:

    C&C RED ALERT 2 / YURI'S REVENGE:

    1) Install the game (obviously). Any version will do, Origin or disc.

    2) Download and install CnCNet here: https://cncnet.org/red-alert-2

    3) If you experience any graphical glitches, click on "Options" and experiment with the different "Renderer" options.

Known issues: Since this game wasn't designed for modern resolutions and monitor sizes, the pause menu is a bit janky (visual only), and if you collapse the bottom toolbar it doesn't look quite right. Otherwise the game runs really well.

The above steps apply to a bunch of other C&C games but I am mainly focusing on RA2 and Generals as these are by far the most popular.

    C&C GENERALS:

This one has taken a LOT of research and experimentation to get right, and is the main reason I wrote this guide. I want to save anyone in the future a lot of pain and time.

    1) Install the game (obviously). Any version will do, Origin or disc.

    2) Download and install Gentools from here: https://www.gentool.net/

Bonus tip: Also check out their mod called "Control Bar HD Remastered", it's freaking sweet! You'll find it on the same site.

    3) If you are using Origin, right click the game in the Origin launcher, navigate to the "CLOUD SAVES" tab and uncheck "Enable cloud saves for all supported games" as this will overwrite some of the mods every time it syncs with the cloud.

4a) If you are using Origin, navigate to the "ADVANCED LAUNCH OPTIONS" tab and type "-win". This will force the game to run in windowed mode. If you don't do this, the game will crash the second time you attempt to perform an ALT+TAB.

4b) If you are NOT using Origin, create a new shortcut by right clicking on your desktop and selecting "New > Shortcut". Then type in:

    "PATH_TO_YOUR_GAME" -win

For example, mine looks like this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour\Generals.exe" -win

Here's a screenshot of what it should look like: https://i.imgur.com/LmK91pW.png

From now on, when you want to play this game click this shortcut instead. If you are playing online, you will need to right click this shortcut and set the compatibility mode to XP SP3, but if you're just playing the campaign or skirmish I don't think this is necessary. I have not done this and it hasn't caused me any issues so far.

Bonus tip: Also add "-quickstart" if you would like this game to boot up super quickly.

    5) If you are using Origin, you will now need to install a mod that allows you to launch the game in windowed mode. The step you performed in #4a alone is not enough. You will need Bibber's launcher...however after 8 years, he's finally decided to shut down his website :( ...luckily, there is a rehost that can be found here: https://cncnz.com/features/technical-support-help-guides/fixed-launchers-for-command-conquer-the-ultimate-collection/

    6) Due to #4 and #5, the game will be running in windowed mode, which is ugly. Install the following software to force it into borderless windowed mode: https://github.com/Codeusa/Borderless-Gaming/releases/tag/9.5.6 - note that there is an optional paid version, make sure you click the correct link to get the free version. Also by the time you read this there will inevitably be more recent version of this so don't literally download the one in the above link - look in Github for the most updated copy.

    7) Launch the game, and click "Options". In the "Detail" dropdown, select "Custom" and then untick "Heat Effects". This will prevent a really obscure crash from happening at some points in the game.

Known issues: Due to running this game in windowed mode, edge-scrolling doesn't seem to work. To sidestep this issue, use either drag-scrolling (holding the right button on your mouse) or the directional buttons on your keyboard. This isn't a huge problem for me as I hate edge-scrolling anyway, it feels so "laggy", I like the speed of using my keyboard to pan the camera around.
