A guide on how to play Command & Conquer games in 2020!

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 09:44 AM PDT

Commanders, with the lockdowns and most of us likely stuck indoors, I figured it would be good to get everyone up to speed if you're wondering how you can play the C&C games again.

I'm hoping this can help you out. If you get stuck with anything, post in the comments and I'll try my best to help.

    --

Can I still play the classic Command & Conquer games?

Yes! It's easier than you think too. There are a few ways to play depending on your preference. The main two approaches:

    • Purely classic experience: CnCNet.
      • Provides single player & multiplayer support for Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert, Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 2 and all the expansions.
      • Downloads come bundled with fixes which make them compatible for the modern O/S on Windows. Some games also support Mac and Linux. (With work ongoing to make them all compatible)
      • The CnCNet app that comes in these downloads makes it easy for playing single player and online multiplayer with 1000's of other players.
    • Reimagined experience: OpenRA.
      • OpenRA is a project that recreates, reimagines and modernizes the classic Command & Conquer games. (Tiberian Dawn & Red Alert) are supported with others such as Tiberian Sun in the pipeline coming soon.
      • They also accommodate easy modern O/S support - with the likes of Windows, Mac, and Linux.

What C&C games are free to play?

Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert, and Tiberian Sun were all officially announced as freeware by EA Games in 2007, 2008, and 2010.

To play other C&C games, you will need to own them. There's an easy way to get all of the C&C Collection via Origin, see the "Games to buy" section below for more info.

    Games

All games listed below have multiplayer support.

    • Command & Conquer (Tiberian Dawn)
    • Red Alert
    • Tiberian Sun
    • Red Alert 2 & Yuri's Revenge
      • Game not included, see the Games to buy section below.
      • CnCNet provides an installer that will look for your Yuri's Revenge installation and apply fixes to make it work for modern O/S.
      • Download the CnCNet App & Play
    • RenegadeSupported by W3DHub - play Renegade (Campaign and Online) or any of it's popular total conversion mods.
    • Generals & Zero Hour
    • Tiberium Wars & Kane's Wrath
    • Red Alert 3
      • Games are not included, see Games to buy section below.
      • C&C:Online is a community-made and -managed online server for Generals, Zero Hour, Tiberium Wars, Kane's Wrath, and Red Alert 3, allowing you to log in and continue playing online just like you could when GameSpy's servers were still online.
      • CNCNZ help articles is also a good resource to help you with getting these games setup if you encounter any issues.

    Games to buy

The best place to get the entire C&C Collection is on Origin. It's EA's official game platform where you can purchase a range of digital games.

Sometimes they have an offer, but if money is a bit of an issue right now given the circumstances, I would recommend doing the following:

    1. Purchase a digital Ultimate Collection code via CD Keys (A legitimate service used by many others).
    2. You will receive your code once payment is complete.
    3. Redeem it via the Origin store. (Tutorial here)
    4. You then own the Ultimate collection for a much discounted price, and forever.

    Are there Mods out there?

Please PM me so I can update the list of mods you would like added.

    • Dawn of the Tiberium Age is a stand-alone game that combines Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert, with GDI, Nod, Allies and the Soviets fighting on the same battlefields.
    • Mental Omega is a large free unofficial expansion pack for Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge. Featuring challenging missions as well many new units.
    • Twisted Insurrection is massive stand-alone total conversion of Tiberian Sun featuring a new story, campaigns and tons of new units.
    • Red Resurrection features the Allies and the Soviets rearmed with new weapons of war, each poised to destroy the other. A newly released Yuri's Revenge Mod.
    • Renegade X is a free Tactical Shooter that brings the Command and Conquer FPS experience to Unreal Engine 3. Renegade X is developed by Totem Arts, an independent group of Command and Conquer fans from around the world dedicated to bringing the world of C&C to you, up close and personal.
    • Interim Apex is a standalone Renegade mod that spans between several of the different C&C universes. Play with over 100 different vehicles including naval battles. Build defenses to fortify your base. Rebuild destroyed structures with a Construction Yard. Upgrade your units in the Communications center. All this on 24 completely unique maps.
    • Red Alert: A Path Beyond aims to recreate Westwood Studios' classic hit, Red Alert, as a first person shooter.

    Are the many players online?

I would say it's a massive yes. Considering how old these games are, collectively across all services I would say its around 3000+ easily.

    • OpenRA have a games page where you can see how many are online.
    • C&C Online also show you how many are online on their homepage.
    • CnCNet recently hit 2000+ concurrent players online. They have a status page where you can see the best time to play.

If you have anything you want to add/or update please PM and I will happily fix.

Aoe 2 is selling like hotcakes on steam right now. Seems $20 is a prime price tag and rts will rise again. Can't wait until June

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 10:36 AM PDT

It's incredible how many people are gaming and streaming right now ( obviously due to world complications ) I feel command and conquer will thrive and Im glad they are releasing it on steam as well. Compared to all the remakes and remasters that I've seen lately, especially with the RTS genre, this new remaster is packed. It's incredible that Command and Conquer remaster has so much to offer, including Collector's Editions, a ton of features, soundtracks...etc They really packed in quality and quantity. I can see Command and Conquer thrive once again, whether it's C&C, red alert, red alert 2, tiberian sun or a new generals. I can see them making profit and building community, the right way... also aoe 1,2 and myth are crossplatform compatible

Shit, even if they don't make "enough" profit, they will still see profit. EA is still a BILLION dollar company....by this point, it should be about customer service and making ea a good name. Look at blizzard right now, again have enough money for CEOs and expensive cars but their customer service and game quality is shit and social media is calling them out, love it. Awesome customer service, will bring awesome profit, it always has and always will.

It's nice to see ea this way, in a day and age with social media, it's not about money and power ( because everyone wants to be rich ) but it's about treating your customers right and companies with LONGEVITY, understand that. It's very easy to upload a bad review and dislike or hate new game trailers and the awesome thing about gamers, is that they seem to band together and voice their opinion, loud. Look at c&c rivals - shit on, the moblie diablo - shit on, microtransactions - shit on... people are not stupid and with them releasing a non microtransactions, full verison c&c remaster, maybe they realize that gamers/humans are not actually dumb and understand what fair is fair.

As of late, I have noticed that Dune 2000 rarely gets 10+ concurrent players online. Ever.

It's time to rise again, my friends! Join the battle for Arrakis, the fight to take control of the planet and its most valuable resource: spice melange.

The game can be downloaded here, with full widescreen support, modding support and integrated CnCnet multiplayer functionality: https://gruntmods.com/dune_2000_gruntmods_edition/

[TO DEV TEAM] Ideas about modding support of C&C Remastered

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 07:47 AM PDT

    To Development Team:

Considering that maybe someone has mentioned these ideas somewhere or even contacted to the development team,

I still want to print the thoughts here as feedback.

    1.Mapping support improvement

Over last few years I've tried mainly developed some RA2 and RA3 unofficial maps,

I found that both Final Alert 2 and World Builder are all inefficient at graphic( e.g. cliff tiles, overlay, layout, ...) editing, which made me think that Westwood/EALA developers can get a map done more faster in some other way. If so, can the map editor get close to you designers in efficiency this time?

2.Modding support improvement. from type to type, from object to object, ...

It seems that because of some reason, games, like C&C2, RA2 and Yuri's Revenge didn't have much time to be more perfect.

There's one thing that I confused. Could the game program code have more extensity for modding?

E.g. I made a AOE effect as primary weapon for Ants like Chaos Drone does, however nothing happened when firing. I tested for several hours till midnight and finally found that the weapon logic is VEHICLE ONLY.

We have many super weapon types since Tiberian Sun but we can't even customize a new type. We have many weapon properties such as heal, charge, however we can't even make them coexist on one unit as primay and secondary weapon, or apply them to a building.

It is said that C&C95 and RA95 can't even realize anything above. That's what I mean supporting modding from type/object/logic to type/object/logic as possible to make modding meaningful.

(AlexB's Ares executable module has expanded a bit, but most of limitations and bugs still can't be avoided.)

    3.Protection for community creations

Some fans may want to protect their map/mod creations from being re-edited inappropriately/in unauthorized way if he or she made a great deal. Even if RA3 is extremely complex in code editing, unofficial maps and textures are still unprotected. This can be evil to the player community. I'm not a programmer and looking forward any idea to solve this.

You know that not all fans of the franchise since 2000 or eariler have more spare time to make community creations. So can you do them a favor to make creation progress easier? As you cooperate with third-party development teams like OpenRA and CNCNet, I wish this time you will have chance to do some jobs to lead the game go further even if leaders of EA killed your update support someday.

    With Respect.

The Taiwan Conflict from Generals: Zero Hour

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 09:35 PM PDT

In Zero Hour, General Shin Fai's background includes a vague mention of him playing a crucial role in preventing the "Taiwan Conflict" in 2009 from going global. What do you guys think this conflict entailed? Assuming that it refers to an actual war between the PRC and Taiwan, what do you think is the most plausible scenario in terms of how it started and what resulted from it, given what we do know of the status quo that existed at the beginning of the Generals storyline?

FWIW, here is the Rise of the Reds mod's take on this ill-explained event. I personally find it implausible that the USA backed off just because Taiwan fell, unless it was led by a president that isolationist enough to not want to bother honoring the existing treaty that obligates his country to defend Taiwan if the conflict "ended" before his troops had ever gotten the chance to engage the aggressor.
