Command and Conquer: Remastered - Matchmaking is still broken!

    Matchmaking is still broken

The changes that were made to the matchmaking in Command and Conquer: Remastered Collection - Season 2, destroyed the quickmatch experience for the majority of the player base in Tiberian Dawn. After they decided to reduce the queue times, I explained the issues in detail and raised my concerns in the following article: Tiberian Dawn Matchmaking 3/3

Unfortunately, the developers do not listen to any reasonable suggestions and clearly do not understand nor care about the issues. As a result, the ladder as it is now is already dead and nobody of the good players is actively playing or caring about the ladder anymore, which was expected and warned about. Unfortunately, the players that keep the ladder alive are ignored but it is what it is. I will keep the analysis very brief as I do not want to waste much time writing about something that is ignored anyway.

    The Leaderboard Data

The data used in this article was scraped from the cnc.community leaderboards (31.08.2020 23:30:57 CEST). The rank brackets in Figure 1 and Figure 2 consist of players grouped in tens. The stats were accumulated and the accumulated average win rate is used to simplify the graph.

    Tiberian Dawn

Figure 1 shows the win rates of season 1 and season 2. Usually, the win rates should hover around 50% as explained in the other article and due to the small player base it is expected to have it slightly skewed in one way or the other and anything between 50-70% is relatively fine.

Season 1 shows that there is a significant skill gap at the top. This is expected in shallow populated games as the outliners will always win the majority of the games regardless of the opponent. However, the data shows that all the other players were matched pretty well. The average win rates were around 50-65%, which is completely fine for a shallow populated game.

Season 2 shows that there is a constant mismatch across the entire ladder as explained in the other article. The players at the top simply do not get to play against each other and as a result, they are yielding win rates above 90% as they are constantly matched with people outside of the top 200 causing a heavy imbalance in the win rates.

The following image (Figure 1) shows how the season 2 matchmaking changes, destroyed the integrity of the ladder. It is a disgrace that the developers let that happen even though they were warned about it. The players at the bottom are not motivated to play anymore as they are constantly matched against top players and the top players are annoyed that they cannot get a good game. As a result, both player groups decide to play less and the majority already left the game. Sadly, the game had to die that way but it is what it is.

Figure 1: Tiberian Dawn Win Rates

    Red Alert

Figure 2 shows the win rates of season 1 and season 2. Just as in Tiberian Dawn, season 1 shows a very healthy ladder in terms of matchmaking as most people were hovering around the 60% win rate and is expected due to the small player base.

Season 1 shows that there is the same skill gap at the top as it is in Tiberian Dawn, which is expected as there will always be players who are clearly better than the rest. Overall the data looks fine and there is not much to say about it.

Season 2 shows that there is a mismatch happening but it is not as bad as it is in Tiberian Dawn as the player base of Red Alert is bigger. However, the same pattern can be observed, and the more the players will get annoyed by it, the more players will leave, and then the win rates will eventually just look like they do in Tiberian Dawn.

Figure 2: Red Alert Win Rates

For those who want to have a closer look at the data here are the relevant tables, interpret them as you wish, I will not waste my time explaining them.

Is there a way to make the guard area bigger in C&C Generals?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 11:16 AM PDT

In the mod End of Days the area your troops will guard is huge where as the vanilla game's area is tiny. Specifically the jets and helicopters' area. I'm hoping it's just something in one of the .ini files.

    Thanks in advance.

    RA4 Possible story line

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 03:35 AM PDT

In the RA uprising futuretech was developing multiple weapons including the sigma harmonizer. If RA4 had happened we could probably have seen an op faction once again. It would be interesting to see what kind of weapons futuretech would have had.

Red Alert Remastered expansion missions in different order than originals

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 09:14 PM PDT

I have noticed that the missions in Counterstrike and Aftermath Remastered are in a different order than in the original games. It seems like the order makes less sense in the remastered version as well.

Just as an example, in Counterstrike Remastered the Allied campaign ends with the mission 'Personal War' which takes place in the middle of the original Counterstrike Allied campaign. Also in the remastered version, it says that mission takes place in Siberia instead of Greece like the original, despite the fact that the description says it is near Athens.

There are many other missions out of order as well, just fire up Red Alert Remastered and check the mission order for the expansions against this list of the order of the originals:

Original Red Alert Expansions mission list

(Technically that link is for Red Alert Retaliation, but it has the mission lists for both Counterstrike and Aftermath in the same place, and in the same order as on PC)

I can't find anything about this online and was wondering if anyone knows why they changed the overall mission order so drastically, especially in the two Soviet campaigns.

Does anyone know if the Dune games work on Windows 10?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 10:11 PM PDT

I realize this is kind of off topic but I could not find a better subreddit and I figure the Dune games are "related to Command & Conquer" at least.

Does anyone know if they work okay? I've been wanting to play them for years but never saw them in stores, I'm thinking about finding some copies (specifically Dune 2000 and Emperor as I'm a big fan of C&C style FMVs) but I was wondering if anyone has tried them on a modern OS? Do I have a shot at getting them working or would that just be a waste of time?
