Posted: 12 May 2021 09:54 PM PDT https://store.steampowered.com/app/1565670/Five_Nations/ So someone just randomly mentioned this game over twitter and so I looked into it, and I am genuinely impressed with the overall quality for being the FIRST game this studio developed! First, there is a free demo and its surprisingly generous. You get access to the first 7 missions of the campaign. The full game has 56 missions. You get full access to two of the games factions in skirmish mode. there are 5 factions in the full game. Several Custom game modes already built in. And a map editor and custom mode editor. The factions i've tried so far are very distinct and interesting and have a pretty diverse fleet (space battles only.) The resource collection reminds me of starcraft, but how armies work feels a bit like C&C. What especially feels like C&C is the fact that you can build a unit that functions like an MCV and deploy it anywhere for more "space control(?)" to expand your base. It even has an unpacking animation! Only a few negatives for me so far. There is a 24 unit selection limit. Meaning if there are 40 units on screen and you click and drag select all of them, you'd only select and issue commands to 24. Granted, there are ways to deal with this like Carriers can house your strike craft which prevents you from selecting them until you detach them from the carrier. You also have control groups. I still prefer if it would allow you to simply select all available units rather then limiting it. In skirmish games, you cannot choose your starting position. The game will randomly place everyone. You could end up with half your team on the wrong side of the map if you wanted a clean and even team battle. I brought up both of these in the steam discussion page and a dev said they will pass this along, so hopefully these two are fixed later. Finally, no online multiplayer, you can only play vs AI. Granted, anything above Beginner AI is actually pretty aggressive and smart. So well done on the AI. They expressed that they hope to add multiplayer later. Overall, I am pretty impressed with the amount of content in the game, the art design and gameplay. just a fun, cheap, classic style RTS and I am pretty happy with it so far. Consider taking a look.
